VMS Basketball Season Recap

Jason Sherpa

The VMS boys Varsity Basketball consisting of Ross Bradbury, Max Vidal, Spencer, Tristyn Hurd, Jake Stavisky, Christian Mills, Turner Ringler, Nolan Kim, Tommy Steele, Beck Sapp, Peter Hughs, Cole Pattison, Nick Kirwood, and Mason Geller played excellently this year and had an amazing season as a result. They went undefeated at home, and made it to regional playoffs where they were defeated by Lotus School for Excellence. It was a tough game and both sides played very well. The VMS Varsity basketball team placed 3rd in the 2A/1A division on the Western Slope,  overall they went 18-4 with an 81.0% win rate.  “Shoutout to our Seniors, they showed up to big games and moments. Also shoutout to our bench players for getting our Seniors prepared by practicing at a high level.” (Coach Florence)

To get a recap on this season I interviewed Coach Berendt, and Coach Florence (Head Coach) to get their insight on the team and the season. I asked them both 3 questions during the interview. The first question was what they thought the team improved on from last year to this year, the second question was what they did well this year, and the last question was what they think the team could improve on.

The Summary of the interview was that from last year the team greatly improved on their transition game which led to more scoring, this helped the team tremendously causing them to win more games. VMS varsity defense was very good at putting pressure while playing defense , and not allowing the other teams to score easily. Overall the seniors on the team were also a strength this year they were all very experienced and very talented, seniors such as Beck Sapp, Cole Pattison, and Nick Kirwood were great leaders on the court.

An area where the team could have improved on is rebounding, being unable to rebound the ball gave the other teams lots of second chances to score which contributed to the VMS team being defeated in some games. There was also a lack of shooting consistency leading to wasted opportunities. Lack of communication on the court also greatly held back the team which led to the offense not being able to produce during the Championship game which led to their defeat.

A struggle the team will face next year is losing many of its key players (Seniors) that I mentioned before, so the team will be relying on the rising Seniors and Juniors such as Turner Ringler, Spencer Hurd, Tommy Steele, Nolan Kim, Jake Stavisky, and Christian Mills.

Next year the team will need to be re-evaluated and the coaches will figure out where to go from there. But overall they will focus more on improving defense, practicing to increase the pressure they put on the opposing team, and full court press will also be used more.

Shoutout again to Ross Bradbury, Max Vidal, Spencer and Tristyn Hurd, Jake Stavisky, Christian Mills, Turner Ringler, Nolan Kim, Tommy Steele, Beck Sapp, Peter Hughs, Cole Pattison, Nick Kirwood, and Mason Geller for the amazing Basketball season.
